Poker is a card game played by two or more people. The goal is to use the cards in your hand and the community cards on the table to make the best five-card poker hand. The highest hand wins the pot. The game is a game of chance, but you can increase your chances of winning by reading your opponents and bluffing when appropriate.
Each player puts in an initial amount of money (the amount varies by game) to get dealt in. Then, when betting comes around to you, you can either call, raise, or fold. If you raise, you must bet the same amount as the person before you (or more). If you fold, you give up your cards and are out of the hand.
After a round of betting, the dealer reveals a fourth community card on the table. This is called the “flop”. Depending on the rules of your game, you may be able to discard and draw replacement cards at this point.
After the flop, Alex checks (he doesn’t have a good enough hand to call). Charley calls and Dennis raises a dime. Dennis has a pair of kings, which is a very good hand. He can make a straight or three of a kind with the kings, and he has an Ace for a high kicker. This is a great poker hand, and it will probably win the pot.
